Schreiner MediPharm, a Germany-based manufacturer of specialty pharmaceutical labels, has introduced a new label designed for cold temperature and frozen products used during clinical trials. The Pharma-Wrap label offers extended text space and wraps around small to medium sized containers as well as ampoules and vials. The label enables easy, reliable marking with variable data, even after its application to the container.

During clinical trials, new pharmaceuticals are often stored at very low temperatures and marked with variable data later in the process. Additional marking of drugs stored at temperatures of below 4° F posed a challenge, because condensation would form on a conventional label immediately after being removed from the freezer. The water from the condensation had to be removed in a separate process before the label could be marked or an additional label could be applied.

The Pharma-Wrap label contains a transparent surface layer that prevents any kind of condensation from forming and protects the base label from abrasion and scratching. This allows for a second smaller label containing the variable data to be applied immediately after removing the product from the freezer.

Another benefit in using the Pharma-Wrap for clinical trials is that it has two detachable corners marked with a P for “placebo” and V for “active drug.” After applying the label, the operator can detach the corner that doesn’t apply to indicate, at a glance, whether it’s a placebo or an active drug.
